Based on the 80s Hasbro animated series, the trailer features the start of the Jem and the Holograms adapted for a more 2015 story than the iconic hologram based story line featured in the series originally.

Jem and the Holograms trailer came out at all media sources and has generated quite some chatter among the original fans of the 80s animated series on which the movie is based. The original series featured an older main character who is the lead singer of the band Jem and the Holograms and the owner and manager of the Starlight Music named Jerrica Benton.

The animated series was a joint collaboration by Hasbro, Marvel Productions and Sunbow Productions. After the successful feature filming of Transformers and G.I. Joe; also by Hasbro, Jem was also in consideration to be made into a feature film. The movie however strays from the original plot of Jem being hologramed on stage.

Or that is so far how the trailer depicts it. According to the trailer of the movie, Jerrica Benton is a teenage girl who lives with her sister Kimber at her aunt’s with her two foster daughters, Aja and Shana. The four girls are being played by Aubrey Peeples, Stefanie Scott, Hayley Kiyoko and Aurora Perrineau respectively.

The girls encourage Jerrica to sing her songs while they would film her but Jerrica is camera shy and would not sing on record. She makes a closet video of her singing a song and her sister posts it on YouTube. The video and the song becomes popular. The girls are soon discovered by a smarmy record executive Erica Raymond played by Juliette Lewis.

Erica gives Jerrica the title of Jem and the band is called Jem and the Holograms. The girls get that 80s themed funky colored hair, shiny outfits and face paints and make up. They become popular with Erica campaigning the band until it is a worldwide phenomenon. Erica convinces Jem that she is the one people want to know about and she is the main attraction until she goes solo and leave her sisters/bandmates behind.

This leads her to soul searching with One Direction’s ‘Story of my Life’ playing in the background and sound advices from her aunt played by 80s sensation Molly Ringwald and Rio, Erica’s assistant played by Step Up’s Ryan Guzman. The band is seen to make some ultra modifications and return as the Jem and the Holograms.

Unless there is some secret plot inside to make the movie a little closer to the animated series, the trailer makes it seem like any other teenage American band claiming fame and falling out movie.

The same storyline was adapted in the film adaptation of Josie and the Pussycats starring Rachel Leigh Cook, Rosario Dawson and Tara Reid. Only there was an underlying plot of an evil twisted Parker Rosey to brainwash all the fans to love her. Unless there is something cooler than that in this movie, it’s just another movie with many other of its kind.
