The biggest question the news raises to mind is: What kind of a card game is interesting enough to be backed up by thousands of average people?! The game is surprisingly for individuals interested in kittens and explosions.
Yes you read it right, ‘Kittens’ and ‘Explosions’ in the same sentence, with other eccentricities such as laser beams, goats and back hair also thrown together in the mix. The game has been cited as ‘a kitty powered version of Russian Roulette’ as it deals with probability of the kitten exploding. The kitten explodes by doing things kittens are not supposed to but usually do in a household and bring about their untimely demise by chewing the forbidden items.
The game design is relatively easy. Each players gets a turn to draw a card, until a player gets an exploding kitten card and explodes from the game meaning loses. As the number of cards drawn increases, the probability of the players exploding also increases. The main objective of playing the game is to dodge the ‘Exploding Kitten’ card before all the other players.
However a ‘Diffuse’ card is also included in the set with the ability to diffuse the kitten explosion. The deck is also designed in a way to allow players to avoid drawing the exploding card. As each player draws more cards the intensity of the game increases.
The game was created primarily by two cartoonists Shane Small and Elan Lee, both of whom had previous experience of working on Xbox design teams. Later Matthew Inman also joined the team after viewing the game and the name ‘Exploding Kittens’ was coined.
The success of the game ‘Exploding Kitten’ can be attributed to the fact that the game itself is a rather simple product. The card game is attention worthy with a new and refreshing concept but does not over complicate the rules to discourage players. The game can be understood and played by people of all age groups. The product itself does not require complex steps of testing and product development.
The most extraordinary detail about ‘Exploding Kittens’ on Kickstarter was the rapidity of funds collected. The funding of the game reached its 100 percent mark in only about 20 minutes and even more surprisingly more than 4 million dollars have already been pledged with 22 days of funding still left.
The project started with a blast and has reached monumental heights. ‘Exploding Kittens’ has officially blasted the history of funded projects on Kickstarter and even the internet.
