The death of her mother was 100 percent preventable, Melissa said
Melissa Rivers is still intensely emotional when it comes to the death of her mother Joan Rivers. For the first time since the “Fashion Police” host Joan Rivers passed away, her daughter Melissa discussed what went through with her mother in the final hours of her life.
“It was a very normal conversion,” Mellisa Rivers told Today’s host Matt Lauer, remembering the last conversation with her mother which was a night before when she underwent a routine throat surgery.
“All she said was, ‘Ugh, I hate having to do this, Getting old sucks,” Melissa recalled.
The next morning she was told by the assistant of Joan River that her mother is no longer breathing. After that, Joan was placed on the ventilator where she died a week after on September 4. Melissa got furious over the unexpected loss of her mother and severely criticized the mismanagement and incompetency of the medical staff. She filed a lawsuit against them in January, citing they were cracking jokes and taking selfies while their patient was lying unconsciously on the operating table.
“In my opinion, it was 100 percent preventable,” Melissa said. “Yes, it was a tragic accident. If something happens, and everyone does everything properly, things happen … you will live with it. When it’s error after error, after error, after error, after behaviors that you cannot even begin to get your head around – you get mad.”
Melissa also talked about The Book of Joan: Tales of Mirth, Mischief and Manipulation, where she has penned the memories of her mother. The book is going to be published this week. In it, she has also shared some of the most astonishing secrets about her mother. Joan Rivers was famous for getting under the knife. Melissa revealed that her mother underwent 348 cosmetic surgeries over her life. Despite all that, she was never happy the way she looked.
