Mount Etna Erupts

Italy’s famous Mount Etna erupted again last Sunday night.

Mount Etna, located in Italy, is the biggest active volcano in the whole of Europe. It is also one of the world’s most active volcanoes and erupts frequently.

Mount Etna erupted once again on Sunday night (June 15th). The spectacular view of lava erupting from Mount Etna in the night sky was also captured on video as can be seen below. 

The current eruption of the lava spread into the Valle del Bove. Lava ash hence closed the Catania Airport in Sicily which is near Mount Etna. However, no injuries were reported.  

The violent bursts of lava eruptions from Mount Etna are called paroxysms. A 2012 study found that the lava that erupted from Mount Etna each year can fill Chicago’s Willis Tower to the brim.

The last major eruption from Mount Etna was seen in 1992. And the first historic Etna eruption took place in 1500 B.C. However, Mount Etna is much older than its first major eruption.

After analyzing ‘elements in Etna’s rocks’, Geologists found that Mount Etna spewed forth lava for the very first time 500,000 years ago.
