Samsung has launched a new platform ‘ARTIK’ which it claims will make developing smart devices easier and faster.
Samsung recently opened a new open platform. They claim that by the help of this platform, it would make development faster and easier. The name of this new platform is ARTIK. ARTIK includes three circuit boards, software support, developer tools and embedded encryption which is used for security.
The chief executive of SmartThings Alex Hawkinson told WSJ that there would be a cloud service available for the developers to create apps for their devices. The smallest module that could be found in the ARTIK1 is just 12mm by 12mm and it used in wearables and end nodes.
The ARTIK1 include a 9 axis motion sensor and Bluetooth low energy connectivity. Samsung also claimed that it could run one full week with just one single charge. Then there is a larger ARTIK which is the ARTIK10. It has eight processor chips, 32 GB of storage and can also handle video playback and encoding.
ARTIK’s users include Boogio. They make sensors for shoes and Weenat. This helps the farmers if monitoring their fields. So now ARTIK is challenging Qualcomm and Intel because both of these companies have similar products.
Samsung are trying to give ARTIK an edge over other company’s products so that it could help with their semiconductor business. Samsung recently started the semiconductor business to cover up for the losses it made in the smartphone sales.
So they need to keep their earnings up and they will do everything to make ARTIK a success. Samsung took a hit in sales after companies like Xiaomi and Micromax emerged. In the first quarter of 2015, Samsung did relatively better when compared with the last quarter of 2014.
Samsung said that its second quarter earnings will get a boost from sales of its memory chips to other phone makers. Samsung isn’t only looking to selling ARTIK to other companies, it is also looking to use the platform to speed up the development of its own televisions and smartphones.
