Snoop Dogg is developing 1980’s Family Drama for HBO

The rap singer, Snoop Dogg, will team up with Allen Hughes in order to develop this new drama series fo HBO.

It has been learnt that HBO is developing a new drama series from rapper and actor Snoop Dogg and director Allen Hughes. The drama is said to be written by Rodney Barnes and is going to be directed by Allen Hughes. The drama is set in 1980s Los Angeles and will center on a family whose normal life is turned upside down by the collision of their community and American politics. 

Cordozar Calvin Broadus Jr or mostly known as Snoop Dogg was born in Long Beach and grew up in the port city just south of Los Angeles in the 1970s and 1980s. Maybe that is the reason for selecting him for this drama series. Snoop Dogg is executive producing the drama series with his longtime manager, Ted Chung of Stampede Management, Hughes and Barnes.

Previously Barnes and Snoop Dogg have worked together on the animated family comedy The Boondocks. The Boondocks was executive produced by Barnes and Snoop Dogg voiced a character. Snoop Dogg and Hughes are represented by WME and Barnes is with Paradigm and Principato-Young.

This Friday at the Austin Convention Center Snoop Dogg became the first hip-hop artist to be honored by the nation’s preeminent music conference. At the show Snoop Dogg and his manager Ted Chung indulged in a promotional conversation and discussed Snoop’s upcoming album “Bush” and also talked about his latest venture, the drama series on HBO.

Remembering his days in Los Angeles in the 1970s Snoop said that everything was very beautiful as people had so many ways to have fun and communicate and those who were underprivileged were taken care of by the government.

He also stated that it was a great society and everyone helped each other. However he explained that when Reaganomics came in everything was taken away such as after school programs. This he said led to increase in crime as guns and drugs started to be shipped into the neighborhood and everyone started to indulge in it. 

So the new HBO drama series will center on this era of Los Angeles and will explore the stories of those who were not fortunate like Snoop Dogg. This show isn’t the only effort that Snoop Dogg has made to give a voice or platform to the less fortunate. He has created Trap Flix which is a website that basically gives a platform to urban filmmakers who do not have sufficient resources.

Then there is the Snoop Youth Football League as well which is entering the eleventh season. In recent years the league has had 58 players that received Divisional scholarships which also includes Snoop’s own son Cordell Broadus. Snoop stated that one of the happiest days was when his son chose a school and seeing that he was going to college.
