Sony says no to Google’s wearable Android OS

The smartwatch wars are heating up with a number of companies offering smartwatches and several others coming to market soon. One of the companies that is trying to win users on the smartwatch market is Sony. Sony has a smartwatch and so far it’s not selling that well.

Sony is looking ahead to future products and has said that it won’t be using Android Wear. Android Wear is the Google operating system based on normal Android and designed specifically for smartwatches and wearables.

Sony says that it won’t use the Google smartwatch OS because it has spent time and money on its own operating system. “We’ve already invested time and resources on this platform, and we will continue in that direction,” Ravi Nookala told CNET in an interview.

Sony /4/be avoiding Android Wear, but other manufacturers will be embracing the new OS with open arms. LG has already announced the G Watch that will run the new Google OS. Motorola also has a smartwatch coming that will use Android Wear. Sony is taking a big risk here, if its smartwatch platform is less polished than Android Wear, shoppers are likely to avoid the watch altogether.

Sony has a history of making products that aren’t that popular with consumers. We will see once Sony launches its next wearable how popular it turns out to be. If it only works with Xperia smartphones, the chances of a commercial success are slim.
