Porsche CEO confirms four-cylinder power in the works

Porsche hasn’t used a 4-cylinder engine in its cars in many years. Back in the day, many of the 914s came with a 4-cylinde.r most modern Porsche cars use a 6-cylinder. Rumors have been circulating that Porsche was looking at a new 4-cylinder engine to power its Cayman and Boxster.

Porsche CEO Matthias Mueller has now confirmed that the 4-cylinder engine is in the works. He said, “We will not separate ourselves from efforts to reduce CO2.”

The good news for those fearing lesser performance form the Boxster and Cayman of the future, Mueller tips that a turbo engine could have an output of 395hp making it one of the most powerful four cylinder engines on the market according to Topspeed.

The 6-cylinder engine sin the new Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS make less power than that with the Carman making 335ho and the Boxster GTS a bit less. If the turbo four-cylinder engine is lighter than the six-cylinder engine used currently and has more power, the future looks very good for the Cayman and Boxster. More power and less weight are both very good things for sports cars.

It has been said that the four in the Cayman and Boxster won’t be the same engine used in the 919 hybrid. It will be a new 4-cylinder boxer engine instead. The Boxster and Cayman are important cars for Porsche and improving performance while making the cars more efficient is a very good thing.
