It has been a close competition on the Billboard around this time when artists are fighting to keep their albums on the top. Artists like Sam Smith and Taylor Swift have managed over twenty weeks on the list and Drake also claimed his spot and it felt that it will be a long time before anyone could move these albums really.

To make matters tougher, it was the original soundtracks that have been dominating the lists lately. The soundtrack for ‘Empire’ with 107,000 units and ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ were also claiming the top spots.

It was the marketing team on Kendrick Lamar’s side that got creative and released the title and art for the album and bombed the listeners with his newest album ‘To Pimp a Butterfly’.

The album was released a week before its scheduled release and it hit the listeners like a hurricane as well as the Billboard 200 where it claimed the No. 1 spot putting the topper Empire soundtrack on 2nd. 363,000 units moved making him the No.1 contender.

Modest Mouse, the alt-rock band, released their 6th studio album ‘Strangers to Ourselves,’ made it to No. 3 with 77,000 units moved. The other new album to make it to the chart at No.8 was Marina and the Diamonds with their album ‘Froot’.

Other artists on the Top 10 positions of Billboard 200 other than Empire and Fifty Shades of Grey are Taylor Swift, Drake, Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran and Maroon 5.

This is Kendrick’s second studio album and 1st on the Billboard 200. The success of the album was recorded for the first week in which the albums were sold. La/3/sold over 300,000 albums and the number is still going up. La/3/has definitely the potential to be as influential on the charts as Drake has been.
