‘It wasn’t an easy thing for me to do’ says Emma who delivered a speech at the UN summit in September about feminism

Emma Watson was all over the news when she was highly praised by everyone for delivering that mind blowing speech on feminism at the UN summit last month. We admit that she appeared in her perfect poise and was nothing less than an epitome of perfection when she delivered the speech but she has admitted that she was quite nervous on the inside. Being a great actor on screen, which she is, it wasn’t so hard for her to cover it up. And we must say, she did it quite well. While she was giving an interview to the Elle UK magazine, she said, ‘I was very nervous. It wasn’t an easy thing for me to do. ‘It felt like: “Am I going to have lunch with these people, or am I going to be eaten? Am I the lunch?”‘

The young and promising actress, who is also keeping up with her role as the UN Goodwill Ambassador has been busy keeping promises on both platforms. During the interview she revealed that her decision to become an activist for women was prompted by her experience of life in the spotlight. She said, ‘Fame is not something I have always felt comfortable with,’ she said. ‘I have really grappled with it emotionally. And, in a funny way, doing this is my way of making sense of the fame, of using it. I have found a way to channel it towards something else, which makes it so much more manageable for me. And this is something I really believe in.’

While she was perfectly composed at the HeForShe campaign launch in September, little did we know about the butterflies in her stomach. She spoke directly about the gender issues and said ‘Feminism is not here to dictate to you. It’s not prescriptive, it’s not dogmatic. All we are here to do is give you a choice. If you want to run for President, you can. If you don’t, that’s wonderful, too. I’m lucky I was raised to believe that my opinion at the dinner table was valuable. My mum and I spoke as loudly as my brothers.’

For all those who are still unaware of her motives, the Harry Potter actress is promoting the HeForShe campaign which follows feminism’s principles of striving for equal rights and opportunities for men and women, including the political, economic and social equality of the sexes. However, there is one thing different about this feminism and the entire point of this is not to highlight too much the male oppression on the female sex but to follow to concept in a lighter way. In fact Emma even men to take part in these efforts to end the issues pertaining to gender inequality.
