Randy Carlyle Fired by Maple Leafs Over Inconsistency in Wins

Apparently, the new year has started on a bad note for Maple Leafs coach, Randy Carlyle. This is because the Toronto Maple Leafs announced on Tuesday that the coach has been fired due to the team’s poor performance. The announcement was made on Maple’s official website.

While making the announcement, the team’s general manager who also doubles as the senior vice president, David Nonis, argued that Randy had done his best to see the team through but had no choice but to send him packing. Nonis cited the recent poor performance of the Leafs but acknowledged that there were few games that the team performed very well under the leadership of Randy.

“I want to thank Randy for all of his hard work and dedication,” said Nonis. “It’s never an easy decision to make when changing your leadership but our team was not trending in the right direction and we felt an immediate change was necessary.”

According to David’s statement, the new change of guard will take place immediately. This means that Randy will not be there to see Leafs clash with Washington Capitals next Wednesday. Leafs will therefore be under the leadership of assistant coaches,  Peter Horachek and Steve Spott. The junior coaches are expected to continue training the team until a new coach is found to fill the gap left by Randy.

As a matter of fact, the performance of Leafs has been so wanting. At the moment the team is holding on to its 45 points which places it at position four in Atlantic Division. On the other hand, Randy has made a name for himself in the NHL for having recorded 364 wins and 260 losses. He has actually been working for Leafs since 2012 and so he is likely to get another deal soon.

Nonis was very clear in his statement. In fact, he sugar coated his reason for firing Randy. “We felt that – one of the things you’ve heard me say since training camp – we needed to see some sort of consistency. We’d all agree that we’ve had some good periods and good stretches, but I don’t think I can stand here in front of you and say we’ve been consistent.

As recent as the last couple of games, we were happy with our game in Boston, played pretty well in Minnesota and had tough games in between. We just felt at this point that this was the right time to make the change and move ahead and try to get this team playing like we have played for periods this season,” Nonis said

Nonis did not disclose whether the management will be hiring another coach any time soon. He stated that their focus was on relieving Randy and the team’s performance in upcoming games. He argued that the right procedures will be followed when the time for bringing another coach on board comes.

“We were focused on today and tomorrow night. There’s a process you go through and there’s doing things the right way. We wanted to take care and handle Randy the right way, focus on tomorrow night and move ahead after that,” said Nonis.

The general manager said he was pleased with how Randy remained composed after being told that his contract has come to an end.” I told Randy late last night. As you would expect he was disappointed but very professional. As gruff as you /4/think he is, he’s a very intelligent man. He understands the game and understands our situation. It wasn’t an extremely long conversation but it went as well as it you would expect from someone who was just let go,” Nonis added.
