Amandla Stenberg explains how white pop artists started adopting black cultural style to appear edgy in ‘Don’t Cash Crop On My Cornrows’ video.

Amandla Stenberg the actress famous for portraying ‘Rue’ in the first instalment of the Hunger Games is shedding light on the issue of race and discrimination in a video posted on Tumblr and YouTube.

The 16 year old starts the video with the politics involved in black hair especially the cornrows. According to Stenberg as the years went by from the 2000’s into the 2010’s more white people began wearing clothes related to the hip hop culture.

Celebrities could be seen styling their hair with the cornrows and braids as the images of Madonna and Christina Aguilera flashes on the screen.

Stenberg then referenced Miley’s use of Black back up dancer in her video ‘We Can’t Stop’ and other dance moves and props involved in the video which are related to the black culture.

Recently even Katy Perry displayed cornrows in her latest video for her song ‘This Is How We Do’. Stenberg also mentioned Kesha and Taylor Swift for having used black culture in their videos.

However even though all the stars are using the black culture to appear more hip, more black people are becoming the victims of police brutality, referencing to the shootings of Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown.

Stenberg then explained cultural appropriation and exchange are always considered the same but in appropriation the culture is adopted without knowledge of the significance of the cultural trend. Stenberg ended the video with a powerful question asking people what America would have been like if the black people were loved just as much as the culture?

Although Stenberg wished to open a dialogue the Billboard site reported her video as a criticism of major female pop-stars. Stenberg spoke out against Billboard citing the source has manipulated her message and trying to pit artists against each other.
