In other NFL news, the New York Giants re-hired Steve Spagnuolo to be their defensive coordinator on Jan. 15. Spagnuolo worked for the Giants in the same capacity from 2007-08. His defense was credited for helping slow down the previously-undefeated New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, per’s Conor Orr.
Spagnuolo has since been the St. Louis Rams‘ head coach, the New Orleans Saints’ defensive coordinator and the Baltimore Ravens’ defensive assistant and secondary coach. Orr says “there was never any doubt” Spagnuolo would be locking up the Giants’ defensive coordinator post.
The Giants have struggled in the past few seasons since they won Super Bowl XLII. They did win the Vince Lombardi Trophy again during the 2011 NFL season, but have made the postseason just once in a six-year span dating back to the conclusion of their 2014 campaign. Former defensive coordinator Perry Fewell was considered one of the reasons for their recent tailspin. The Giants fired him on Jan. 7, per Orr.
