The downside to going GPE with this phone is that you lose all of the unique software features that Samsung’s baked into its very own interpretation of Android.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Google Play Edition shows up again

We won’t be surprised if someone told us about the Google Play edition of the Galaxy S5 because it has been while that it has become really obvious that Samsung had such an edition in the pipelines and now it has just become more obvious. The predecessor S4 too had a Google Play edition of its own last year and also HTC One so we don’t see any reason why the S5 wouldn’t get its own. However, we didn’t expect that these two versions would become so popular that they would fall into the mass market category and when it did happen, Google was quick to ask Samsung for a reprise.

And this explains why we will have the Samsung Galaxy S5 Google Play Edition (GPE) which has already appeared on the internet in the form of its recently leaked render. The very first glimpse we had of the phone was back in April when a Google mishap allowed the S5 GPE to be shown in the picture associated with the S4’s listing in the Play Store.

It won’t be entirely wrong if we would want to call this GPE version a ‘vanilla’ version of the S5. The major difference in this version would be that of the software which would be ‘stock Android‘ just like what you get when you purchase a Nexus. The good news is that because Google has a direct hand in the update process for all the GPE versions, updates to new Android versions ought to come much faster than for the TouchWiz-infused variation of the S5. The Galaxy S5 GPE will probably be sold for around $599-699, sans contract, exclusively in the Play Store.
