Cate Blanchett received an honorary doctorate degree from the Macquarie University in Arts. She gave an inspirational speech to the graduating class regarding the importance of an arts degree in the practical world.

Cate Blanchett was born in Melbourne and graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Arts in 1992. That was the end of her educational journey. After that she worked at the Sydney Theatre Company on productions and TV shows. In 1997, she debuted in the international movie Paradise Road.
Since then, Cate has worked in critically acclaimed movies and blockbuster hits such as The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Cate has won numerous theatre category and film awards including two Academy awards, three Bafta awards and three Golden Globe awards.
The graduating class of 2014 at Macquarie University couldn’t have asked for a better person to speak a few words of wisdom to them on the day when they are finally ready to take on the world.
Cate herself was awarded an honorary doctorate degree in Arts. She addressed the students and told them that the Arts are innovative and creative. People will question an Arts degree in the practical world but we must defend it. We must tell the world that arts are as important as science in shaping the world.
She encouraged the students to step forward and help change the future in light of the skills and creativity that they have acquired. They must be responsible for the evolution of how people see the modern world.
The Vice Chancellor of Macquarie University, Professor Dowton, acknowledged Cate as one of the greatest actors in the world. He told his students that they were lucky that they were being addressed by someone they had seen all their childhood and adolescence in different movie roles, speaking to them.
Telling them about her experiences and preparing them for the world outside. The students felt privileged to meet one of their idols face to face on graduation day as well. Cate Blanchett will star next in the movie The Present alongside Richard Roxburgh.
